The city Agra of Uttar Pradesh has got a huge historical background. It is an important tourist spot for both the Indian as well as the foreign visitors.
The Persian King Babur laid the foundation of the great Mughal rule in India by defeating Sikander Lodhi and winning over the then capital city Agra in 1526 A.D. Babur built the first monument of the Mughal architecture in Agra. It is a planned garden known as Gul-E-Afgan or the Aram Bag. During the rule of the great Akbar, the third ancestor of the Mughal dynasty, Agra got many architectural marvels and become world famous. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort are the most prominent among them. Finally, Agra got the wonder of the world in the form of Tajmahal, the architectural marvel built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Tajmahal later declared as the World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1983. This city is also famous for being the part of Brijbhoomi; the land associated the birth and legendry activities of lord Krishna.
Agra is a major railway junction on main broad gauge routes to the south, east and west and is connected to almost all cities of India by railways. Agra, on cross roads of national highways 2, 3 and 11, is excellently connected to all parts of the country by road. It is 232 km., 119 km. and 204 km. distant from Jaipur, Gwalior and Delhi respectively. It is famous for handicrafts products such as work on Leather work, Carpets, Jwellery, Marvel, Footwear, Embroidery work, Brass wear, and Zari. The major tourists’ spots of Agra are Tajmahal, Sikandra, Itmad-Ud-Daulah, Agra fort, Chinni Ka Roja, Mariyams Tomb, Fatehpur Sikri, Kailash Temple, Radha Swami Samadhi, Digambar Jain Mandir, Guru Ka Tal Gurdwara, Jama Masjid and Catholic Church etc.
